Ukraine needs peace, but not peace on its knees – or the peace of the grave

Press release 19.11.2024

Oras Tynkkynen in the group speech for the Greens:

Ukraine needs peace, but not peace on its knees – or the peace of the grave

Parliamentary group chairperson Oras Tynkkynen remarked in today’s topical debate in parliament that a just peace in Ukraine is possible, but if – and only if – the West shows sufficient support.

“A just peace requires tougher sanctions against Russia and its allies, Iran and North Korea. The flow of Western components into the Russian arms industry must be blocked and the shadow fleet that transports Russian oil must be stopped”, Tynkkynen stated in the group speech for the Greens.

A thousand days after the start of the war, Finland is still doing business with Russia. Tynkkynen demanded an answer to the question of the price of freedom.

“Do we value freedom more than bloodstained nickel? Or fertilisers that leave an aftertaste of blood in the grain we grow? Or fossil gas that burns with a blood-red flame?”, Tynkkynen referred to the products that Finland still imports from Russia.

Tynkkynen stated that a just peace also requires more military support for Ukraine.

“The West needs to deliver more air defense systems and other weaponry, and start the production of defensive materiel in Ukraine. Ukraine must also be given permission to defend itself by striking military targets on the aggressor’s soil,” Tynkkynen stated.

Tynkkynen also addressed the growing number of calls for peace negotiations.

“No one wants peace more than the Ukrainians. But that cannot mean peace over the heads of the people of Ukraine. It cannot mean peace on their knees nor the peace of the grave,” Tynkkynen concluded his speech.

Parliament held a topical debate to commemorate that today a thousand days have passed since the start of Russia’s large-scale war of aggression. Tynkkynen, who gave the group speech for the Greens, also serves as one of the two chairpersons of the parliamentary Ukraine group.
